Checkers has been traced back to the 15th century. Its exact origins are unknown, but it could have been developed from an earlier game called Alquerque by Moorish or Spanish merchants living in Africa. The game became popular in Europe when it was introduced by French soldiers returning from Algeria – it was called dames (which means “ladies”) because French royalty liked playing it.

The first English rules for checkers were published in 1675 by John Conway (1632-1679), but the colored squares were introduced much later – around 1750.

In recent decades there has been renewed interest in checkers, especially among younger players who enjoy playing online or by playing in their own phone.
